The ancient art of pottery, whose origins date to the first settlements of farmers in the period going from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic Age, includes various techniques for the production of objects made of clay and subjected to one or more firings. The term “ceramics,” used to refer both to the art and to the objects obtained by it, is derived from the Greek keramos (meaning “clay” or “pot”), but only entered current usage in the 19th century. The different kinds of pottery are classified according to the type of clay used, their decoration, and manufacturing techniques. - TERRACOTTA or EARTHENWARE is clay fired at temperatures of 900°-1000° C, and left unglazed. - GLAZED POTTERY is earthenware covered with a white or colored enamel glaze, then fired again at a temperature between 920° and 940° C. Decorative glazes can be transparent or opaque. Among enamels, the best known and most commonly used is the shiny white tin glaze classically used for majolica.
90% of the ceramic wares shown here have lead-free glazes and are suitable for kitchen and dining use.
